Old becomes new in the hands of Cross River home design craftswoman

CROSS RIVER — With Chinese rice boxes remade into planters and bird baths that became candle holders, Mary Mayland is no stranger to the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure."

In Mayland's shop, Baxter and Co. HOME, she transforms items that are years old into household furnishings whose beauty is apparent but whose origin is much harder to spot.

Mayland's furnishings, which mostly range from tabletop items to wall décor, have a certain uniqueness about them. She buys what is on sale in another store, at estate sales, picking up anything that she feels she can re-create.

"We take crummy old things and make them new," Mayland said. "Nothing looks the same when it's done. No one would ever recognize it."

One of Mayland's loyal customers and longtime friends, Evelyn Ricci, now a Manhattan real estate broker, claims that, "I have been in a lot of houses and I have not seen anything that she sells in her store anywhere else."

One technique that Mayland has become known for — and one that makes her stand out from the many fine home furnishing stores in northern Westchester — is leafing.

Whether it be in gold, silver or copper, leafing helps transform one of Mayland's old items into something luminous and new.

"I just always sort of did it, and I felt like there was a need for that sort of stuff," she said. "I would have these projects where I would buy something and put leafing on it."

All of the mirrors that take up the majority of the store's wall space have this technique, which Mayland said never tarnishes.

"The finishes are great," Ricci said.

Although everything is very unique, "There isn't one particular style. It's not that it's only antique or only postmodern, I think it appeals to most people," Ricci said. "One can spend a lot of time in there, and it's great for gifts."

Mayland's home furnishing career started out from just wanting to sell her own furniture in her Manhattan apartment.

"I had a house full of stuff, and it was very unusual stuff that I had painted or gilded," she said. "So I said you know what? I'm going to open a store in Manhattan until I sell everything."
